# Files

> Upload, read, and download files independently of filing workflows.

Use the v2 file APIs to upload files, read available extracted text, and download
original versions. These APIs work across applications; filing APIs reference
files by ID.

Prepare signed PUT instructions.

```http theme={null}
POST /api/v2/files/uploads
```

Confirm stored bytes and return file details.

```http theme={null}
POST /api/v2/files/uploads/complete
```

Read a bounded chunk of existing extracted text.

```http theme={null}
GET /api/v2/files/{fileId}/text
```

Get a signed redirect for an original file version.

```http theme={null}
GET /api/v2/files/{fileId}/download
```

Start with [Upload files](/guides/files/upload-files) for the upload walkthrough.
See [Read and cite document evidence](/guides/read-filing-documents) for text,
downloads, and version handling. The [Files API reference](/api-reference/files/prepare-file-uploads)
contains the request and response schemas.

An `@mc` upload destination requires an explicit authorization `scope`.
For filing documents, follow the [filing guide](/guides/managed-filings/manage-documents)
to use the filing's scope and associate each uploaded file with the filing.
